Spring 2008: News, Recent Work, Exhibits, Lectures

Fire and ice, two poles of creation, energy, and destruction.  Life is precarious on our fragile planet.  Ice, which I have now photographed in both the Antarctic and more recently in the Arctic, is a major contributor to the climate change that is just beginning to impact us.  Fire also fascinates me.  Recently I photographed Pompeii, Iceland, and the Pinacate region of northern Mexico.  In India, I photographed the forests and animals of Kipling's Jungle Tales–a magical world minimally protected and highly endangered. Below are some of the photographs from these travels.

"Women to Watch" National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C. March 14-June 15, 2008. Reception March 26th "... Women to Watch focuses on 32 photographic works by 11 contemporary women artists. Exhibition visitors will be introduced to contemporary photographers whose work reflects the myriad ways in which the media is used today. "I have always been interested in time and landscape," Myers said during a recent studio visit. "I don't see landscape as a static object sitting in front of the camera. I constantly look at the land and wonder how it looked 100 years ago or 1,000 years ago."

"BRIMSTONE: PHOTOGRAPHS FROM ICELAND, YELLOWSTONE AND POMPEII
Joan Myers is one of New Mexico's most intelligent and prolific artists.  Over the last twenty-five years she has produced photographic projects and books about the Santa Fe Trail, Japanese relocation camps, images of older women, the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain,   the environment of the Salton Sea near Palm Springs, California, and a comprehensive document and book of Antarctica.

In recent years Myers has been photographing globally.  The exhibit highlights her color photographs made in Iceland, Italy and in Yellowstone where she has been concentrating on geothermal sites that include boiling lakes, mud pots, hot springs and geysers, as well as the ancient city of Pompeii that was destroyed by the fiery eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D." - Andrew Smith Gallery, 122 Grant Ave., Santa Fe, NM
